The Elementary Program is open to children in grades one (1) through six (6). The Tradition, Scripture, Prayer, and Social Teaching of the Catholic Church are taught. Each grade level focuses on doctrine, Bible stories, forms of prayer, and charitable activities that intertwine so that information and formation are developing in the child. CRITERIA FOR ADVANCEMENT: One hundred percent attendance is preferred - eighty percent attendance is expected for all students (14 of the 18 classes). Students with more absences miss out on significant opportunities for learning and fiath development and are not considered in "Good Standing" (see below) for the coming year. * Fourth, fifth, and sizth grade students are required to complete a minimum of two Chapter Reviews during class time each semester. A passing grade of seventy percent or higher is expected on these reviews. Our catechists will make arrangements for a retake for any student scoring less. * First, second, and third grade students may complete the Chapter Reviews as a group during class time. Upon completion of the Spring semester, Student Evaluations will be mailed to your home. These will focus on positive accomplishments, behavior, and participation by students. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is first presented to our students in second grade. In December, all second graders are expected to attend their grade level specific Reconciliation Service. For the families who cannot attend classes due to a legitimate conflict, St. Leonard Religious Education offers a Home Study alternative on an exception basis only. Students benefit greatly from the classroom experience which cannot be duplicated at home. Home Study participants are required to meet with the coordinator in the fall and spring. All completed materials are due according to the provided schedule. Students have access to the audio-visual aides and/or craft projects by contacting the Religious Education Office. Families will be given a student textbook, a family home study guide (for the parent), a memorization sheet, and a schedule of due dates for the chapter reviews. Fifth and sixth graders will work out of their own bible which will be provided to them. Fifth graders will also be given information on the Sacrament of Reconciliation as they are required to attend two spring session classes prior to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Sixth graders are invited to attend the celebration of the Seder Meal before Easter. All grades are welcome at the Parish Reconciliation Services as scheduled. MEMORIZATION OF PRAYERS AND FACTS * Learning prayers and facts that are central to our Catholic Faith is a key component of your child's religious education. The first week of class in both the Fall and Spring session, students are given a page containing the prayers and/or facts either studied during the coming year or that are complimentary to the grade level. Parents are the primary instructors for their children in all areas, including faith development. Therefore, parents are expected to assist their children in memorization at home. This is one of the many ways parents are involved in our religious education program. * Not al children are able to memorize and recite due to various learning obstacles. If your child struggles with this, please inform us either on the registration form - or - by contacting the Religious Education Office. We will adjust your child's record accordingly. * The current schedule for memorization as well as the grade level specifics can also be found on this website. Just click on the 'Elementary' tab unde the Main Menu. Then select 'Listening Schedule' for the list of dates. The prayer / facts may be found by selecting 'Prayer for Memorization'. * Completion of all memorization for the Fall and Spring sessions is required by the end of the respective session. Eligibility for students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade will be determined by the students' good standing for the coming year as well as continuing in good standing during the year of sports participation. Absences during religious education class time due to events composed of youth in St. Leonard Athletic Program are not acceptable (practices, games, tournaments, team pictures, etc.) Good Standing Requirements: > 80% attendance in class > Passing grade on all chapter reviews (gr. 4, 5, & 6) > Completion of memorized prayer and facts Good Standing Requirements must be complete by May 31, 2011 in order for any fourth, fifth, or sixth grade student to participate in St. Leonard Sports Programs for 2011-2012.
